Mexican Gold MEXICAN GOLD excerpt

Thinking that all his business problems would wait until he returned to his office, he poured a brandy and sat in the easy chair facing the TV in the family room. He picked up his Wall Street Journal and glanced at the front page. A headline about the drug war between the Juarez and Sinaloa drug cartels in Mexico immediately caught his eye. He read the article about the latest killings in the state of Chihuahua and shook his head in disgust. How the hell did we get caught up in this mess? I wish I never received that phone call from Benjamin. I need to talk to Gerald as soon as I get back to the office. Somehow that delivery to Bogotá has to be made next week. LeBaron sometimes thought that starting up Defense Logistics Systems was not the smartest thing he ever did. Seems the problems of the business never left him. The hell with it, it will all wait until I get back to Washington. He found the Miami Heat basketball game on the TV, took a sip of his brandy, and soon had dozed off.

The telephone ringing finally woke LeBaron up. The phone stopped ringing, then started ringing again. He picked up the phone in the kitchen thinking it was Linda calling to tell him about the meeting in New York. "How did it go, Linda?"

"One million U.S. dollars and a shipment of your best guns will get Benjamin LeBaron back alive to Galeana."

"Who the hell is this? What are you talking about?"

"I'm talking about your grandfather, jackass. Wait for directions."

The phone went silent. Robert LeBaron, now wide awake, took several deep breaths as his mind kicked in to realize what he had just heard. Think man. Who would grab Benjamin? The deal was with that Ramirez who Benjamin made me meet in Galeana. Could it be someone from the Juarez cartel who has found out about our Sinaloa deal? Who the hell can help with this mess now? Robert LeBaron's hands were shaking as he sat on a stool by the kitchen phone. He looked at his watch and realized it was after ten o'clock when that call came. I better just wait for directions before I talk to anyone. Robert closed his eyes as he thought about the secret trip to Galeana he made two months ago. It all seemed so straight forward; Benjamin would get the guns he needed, Ramirez would retire, and life in the valley would quiet down since the Juarez cartel would have all the business. The phone rang again and Robert waited to answer.

"Who am I talking to?"

"You are nosey."

"Do I know you?"

"You only do business with my competitor El Chappo."

"What do you want me to do?"

"Stop the deal with Sinaloa and deliver the weapons to Venezuela."
